"I am able to accomplish these things because I know that I am unconditionally loved." When I heard these words from a bold, well-known author this year, they crystallized everything about my 2023 journey. This understanding of unconditional love as a foundation for professional courage helped me make two significant pivots this year. First, I left my comfortable position in non-profit healthcare for a late-stage startup. I never thought I would make a change like that but it has been a positive change that aligned with my core values. The work has greater flexibility so I get to spend more time with my family, the work is not buried in bureaucracy and politics so I get to be authentically me, and I am new to this sector so I am learning constantly. The second pivot was reimagining my coaching practice. While I cherished working with healthcare leaders, I realized I was falling into consulting rather than true coaching. Empowered by the security of unconditional love, I took the risk of completely shifting my client base. This year I worked with mainly small business owners and entrepreneurs. The results have been transformative: This year I worked with 26 clients helping them overcome or prevent burnout, align their values with their life goals, and ultimately change their relationship with success so that they are coming from a place of intrinsic motivation versus external motivation. This shift in perspective, understanding that my worth isn't tied to my output, has been revolutionary. Like that author whose words touched me so deeply, I've discovered that with unconditional love we are able to do work that matters, take risks, and ultimately try new things because the work does not define us and it does not make us more loveable. This foundation of unconditional love is now enabling my boldest move yet: I am in the process of creating a new core offer for my coaching practice. While maintaining my focus on preventing burnout and creating sustainable success, I'm developing a more in-depth program. My goal is actually to work with fewer clients but do deeper work. By limiting myself to 20 clients, I can dedicate more time to each relationship, fostering the kind of deep, holistic transformation that only comes from sustained engagement. While lying in the hospital bed awaiting surgery, I confronted a devastating truth: I’d been measuring my life’s worth by checkboxes on an achievement list rather than by moments of genuine connection and purpose....

Most of us know that setting goals is crucial for success, but there’s one problem: We’re solving the wrong problem. While most goal-setting advice focuses on motivation, willpower, and habits, I’ve noticed something fascinating: The people who most consistently hit their goals aren’t necessarily the most motivated or disciplined. They’re the ones who are ruthlessly specific about defining success. Here’s what I mean: Last year, I tracked hundreds of goals I set for myself and my clients. The...
